Complications in the process of labor and delivery can result in a wide variety of problems in the baby that may be evident immediately or during the first few years of the child's life. Birth injuries range from mild to severe and may be caused by:

Cerebral palsy refers to a group of chronic disorders that affect a person's motor skills, muscle tone and muscle movement. Damage to the brain during gestation and/or delivery causes poor muscle control. There are three types of Cerebral Palsy, but a child may be affected by more than one.
Spastic Cerebral Palsy: may affect the ability of muscles
to relax.
Ataxic Cerebral Palsy: may cause tremors,
impaired balance and impaired depth perception.
Athetoid Cerebral Palsy: may lead to involuntary
movements in certain muscle groups.
Injuries causing Cerebral Palsy occur while the fetus is forming
or during childbirth, but many doctors do not diagnose it until
the child is almost two years old. At that time, developmental delays and
other impairments become obvious. In addition to impairment of movement
and motor skills, additional conditions and complications associated with
CP include epilepsy, attention deficit disorder, and learning disabilities.
